Mystery tree

I was unable to attend the tree lecture last night. This morning we are at Bellevue State Park, and I am finding these all around. What are they?

Research leads me to believe it is a chestnut tree. I thought we didn't have any left.

Are they horse chestnuts? Answers to come.
