Blue stump, Day 5; new mushrooms

Lums Pond, afternoon
Overcast, damp

In five days, the leaves on the cut branch have withered. The big yellow leaf in the foreground is new--I'll have to find out what tree it's from.

Mystery of the bulbs from nowhere

These bulbs are scattered all around the garden in front of the office at Lums Pond. Did an animal dig them up? They don't seem to have come from the trees.

Night spider

Built a lovely, huge web between our flowerpot and rail. I was destroying the web trying to get its picture; I hope it can rebuild.

Haunting frog

Captain Paul told me they have lots of these (American green tree frogs, hyla cinerea) around the ticket office. This guy is hanging out near the light to catch the bugs.
Delaware is the northernmost limit of their range.

Blue stump, Day One; a still stream; many mushrooms; trees to identify

On Thursday, October 3rd, at Lums Pond, a group of volunteer coordinators from different state parks (and one intern) learned about invasive plant removal. Kate and Kristen from Environmental Stewardship showed us how to cut down some Autumn Olive. When we were done, they painted some blue herbicide on the stumps. I decided to come back to one stump and keep up with what happens around it for the next year or so.
24 hours after cutting/herbicide application. You can see some cut AO branches on the left.
Opposite the blue stumplet (behind me when I'm taking pictures) is this tree with shelf fungus.

I spent some time after I checked on the stump sitting by this stream. There are some obvious differences between it and Red Clay Creek, where we did the aquatic ecology field trip.

For one thing, it's not moving. The only disturbance was the falling of leaves onto the surface of the water.
